Shilajit has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries — long before it became the dark, mysterious supplement showing up all over social media.

And honestly, shilajit doesn't need the hype.

It's a fascinating naturally occurring substance with a long history of traditional use, an unusual spectrum of organic compounds and trace minerals, and a growing — although still relatively limited — body of modern research.

But there's one very important catch:

With shilajit, quality matters enormously.

Perhaps more than almost any other supplement we source.

What Is Shilajit?

Shilajit is a naturally occurring substance found in mountainous rock formations, particularly throughout parts of the Himalayas and surrounding regions.

It forms over a very long period of time through the transformation of organic plant material within layers of rock.

The resulting material contains a complex mixture of naturally occurring compounds including:

  • Fulvic and humic substances

  • Trace minerals

  • Organic acids

  • Polyphenolic compounds

  • Other naturally occurring plant-derived constituents

Traditionally, shilajit has been considered a rasayana in Ayurveda — a category of substances used to support vitality, resilience, and overall well-being.

Modern science is now beginning to investigate some of the compounds that may help explain that long history of use.

Fulvic Acid + Humic Substances

One of the defining characteristics of shilajit is its content of fulvic and humic substances.

These are complex organic compounds produced during the long-term breakdown of plant matter.

Fulvic acid gets most of the attention in supplement marketing, but shilajit isn't simply a fulvic acid supplement.

It's a naturally occurring matrix of many compounds.

Fulvic substances have been studied for their chemical interactions with minerals and other molecules, and researchers continue to investigate their antioxidant and biological properties.

This is one reason we prefer thinking about shilajit as a whole, naturally occurring substance rather than reducing it to one flashy active ingredient.

Shilajit also naturally contains a broad spectrum of minerals derived from its geological environment.

This is part of what made it particularly interesting to us.

Minerals are foundational.

Shilajit doesn't replace a nutrient-dense diet or the major minerals your body requires in meaningful amounts.

What Does the Research Actually Say?

Shilajit has an enormous traditional reputation.

The modern human research is much smaller.

That's worth saying clearly.

There are interesting studies looking at purified shilajit in areas including male reproductive health, hormone levels, exercise performance, and cellular energy metabolism.

For example, one randomized, placebo-controlled trial in healthy men ages 45–55 found changes in total and free testosterone after 90 days of supplementation with purified shilajit.

Other research has explored its use in male reproductive health and physical performance.

Those findings are interesting.

But they're not a reason to turn shilajit into a "testosterone booster" or miracle energy supplement.

The body of human research is still relatively small, different studies use different purified or standardized preparations, and more independent research is needed.

That's why our interest in shilajit starts with its traditional use, mineral and organic-compound profile, and quality — not a promise that taking it will dramatically change one biomarker.

Shilajit + Cellular Energy

One of the more interesting areas of shilajit research involves cellular energy production.

Researchers have investigated compounds within shilajit for their potential relationship with mitochondrial function — the cellular processes responsible for producing much of the energy your body uses.

That's intriguing, particularly given shilajit's long-standing traditional association with vitality.

But again, we think context matters.

Shilajit doesn't manufacture energy out of nowhere.

Cellular energy depends on adequate food, minerals, micronutrients, sleep, metabolic health, and functioning mitochondria.

Shilajit is one potential tool within that much bigger picture.

Support the physiology. Don't chase the hack.

Why Purification Matters

Raw shilajit isn't something we recommend scooping directly from a rock and consuming.

Because of how and where shilajit forms, naturally occurring material can contain unwanted contaminants.

Proper processing and purification are therefore essential parts of producing a finished shilajit product.

This distinction matters because "raw" and "unprocessed" don't automatically mean better.

Sometimes processing exists for a very good reason.

With shilajit, we care about responsible sourcing, appropriate purification, and verification of the finished material.

Resin vs. Powder vs. Capsules

There's also a lot of misinformation around format.

You'll frequently hear that "real shilajit only comes as resin."

That's too simplistic.

Traditional purified shilajit is commonly associated with its characteristic dark resinous form, but legitimate purified shilajit can also be further processed into standardized dry extracts and capsules.

A powder isn't automatically fake.

A resin isn't automatically good.

Testing matters more than appearance.

What we care about is the identity of the material, how it was sourced and processed, what else has been added to it, and whether the finished product has actually been tested.

A beautiful jar of black resin tells you very little about any of those things.

The Shilajit Quality Problem

This is where we get particularly picky.

Shilajit is a naturally occurring substance collected from geological deposits — and its composition can vary tremendously depending on where it comes from and how it's processed.

It is also a category vulnerable to adulteration.

That makes third-party testing incredibly important.

For a shilajit product, we want to know:

  • Is the material actually shilajit?

  • Where was it sourced?

  • How was it purified?

  • Are there unnecessary fillers or adulterants?

  • Has the finished product been tested for heavy metals?

  • Has it been evaluated for microbial contamination?

  • Can the supplier substantiate what they say is in it?

This isn't a category where we are comfortable buying based on a beautiful label and an impressive fulvic-acid percentage.

We want receipts.

Why Heavy-Metal Testing Matters So Much

Shilajit comes from rock.

Mineral-rich geological materials can contain both minerals we want and elements we absolutely do not want accumulating in a daily supplement.

Lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury are not things you can identify by looking at the product.

You cannot taste them.

And "natural" does not mean contaminant-free.

This is why third-party heavy-metal testing isn't an optional bonus for shilajit in our opinion.

It's part of responsible sourcing.

Our Genuine Shilajit is sourced with that standard in mind and third-party tested for purity.

Because the more unusual the raw material, the more important verification becomes.

How to Use Shilajit

How much shilajit you take depends on the specific preparation and concentration, so we recommend following the serving directions for the product you're actually using rather than relying on a universal "pea-sized amount."

Shilajit can be incorporated into a daily routine with water or another beverage, depending on its format.

As with most foundational support, we don't think more is automatically better.

Use an appropriate amount. Use it consistently. And pay far more attention to quality than to chasing a massive dose.

If you're pregnant, nursing, taking medications, or managing a medical condition, talk with your healthcare provider before adding a new supplement.

Shilajit Isn't a Substitute for Minerals, Food or Sleep

This is probably obvious by now, but it's worth saying.

We don't sell shilajit because we think you should take it instead of eating mineral-rich food, getting enough protein, sleeping, moving your body, or supporting your basic nutrition.

We like it because it fits into that philosophy.

It's a traditional, naturally occurring substance with an unusually complex spectrum of trace minerals and organic compounds that can complement the foundations you're already building.

No single product is going to compensate for ignoring those foundations.

And it shouldn't have to.

The Bottom Line

Shilajit has survived centuries of traditional use for a reason worth exploring.

Modern research has identified a complex mixture of fulvic and humic substances, minerals, and other naturally occurring compounds and has begun investigating their effects in the human body.

Some of that research is genuinely interesting.

A lot more still needs to be done.

And that's okay.

We don't need to turn every traditional substance into a miracle supplement in order to appreciate it.

For us, the case for shilajit is simpler:

It's a mineral-rich traditional substance with an intriguing composition and a long history of use — and when we're going to consume something sourced from the earth every day, purity, sourcing, and testing are non-negotiable.

That's the part we're willing to stand behind.
